Proposed rules issued April 1 by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to address calorie labeling on restaurant menus are good but could be better, said 2 members of Congress who have been active on the issue.
Sen Tom Harkin (D, Iowa), chairman of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions, and Rep Rosa DeLauro (D, Conn) had sponsored the Menu Education and Labeling Act. That bill's provisions were incorporated into the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, which prompted the FDA to issue the proposed rules.
