To the Editor: The article by Drs Eysenbach
and Diepgen1 raises the important issue
of how physicians should handle e-mail from persons with whom there is no
established patient-physician relationship. Eysenbach and Diepgen correctly
point out that recent guidelines on e-mail use2
ignore the circumstance of e-mail contact when no patient-physician relationship
has been established, and calls for development of such guidelines.
