To the Editor: The findings of the study by Drs Ayanian and Cleary1 appeared in striking contrast to tobacco industry claims that succeeded in a federal courtroom in Ohio the same week.2 The winning defense was based on the argument that everybody knows and has long known the risks of smoking. Ayanian and Cleary have demonstrated that this is far from true, even 35 years after the first report on the topic by the surgeon general.
