To the Editor: The article by Dr Baldwin and colleagues1 on the NPDB hit the mark in one part of its comment but missed this major point. It is true that we are sanctioning our colleagues much less than we might due to the increasing serious consequences of this reporting. This ill-conceived program has had a chilling effect on our ability and willingness to carry out the needed sanctions for some physicians' problem behavior.
