To the Editor: I applaud Dr Goold and colleagues1 for their attempt to offer an alternative to the concept of medical futility in managing conflicts in end-of-life care. Futility is a conflict resolution strategy based on power, not persuasion. It is gratifying to read an article that presents understanding and negotiation as superior alternatives.
