In Reply: Dr Doody questions whether it was appropriate to include patients with GDS stage 6 in our study. We enrolled these patients based on a prior study that demonstrated similar survival for patients with stage 6 or 7 dementia following hospitalization.1 In our study, 43 (36%) of the 118 patients with dementia were classified as GDS stage 6. Survival for the stage 6 group was 54% at 6 months as compared to 43% for patients with stage 7 dementia (P = .30).
