In Reply: Dr Hermos speculates that the military's selection process may explain why in-hospital and subsequent mortality were lower among black veterans than among white veterans. His hypothesis that hospitalized black veterans may have greater personal and social resources should be tested in future studies. Dr Page reminds us that several studies, including his own, have demonstrated little or no difference in the way black and white veterans are cared for in the VA system.13
