To the Editor: In a recent Medical News &
Perspectives article on pediatric dermatology, Ms Lamberg referred to a "new
5-year training program," citing "1 to 2 years' residency in pediatrics, 2
years in dermatology, and 1 to 2 years in a combined residency," and leaving
the impression that these years of training will satisfy the eligibility requirements
for certification in pediatric dermatology.
These statements fail to state the requirements for certification in
pediatric dermatology and also suggest that training in a combined residency
in pediatrics and dermatology can satisfy these requirements. Lamberg has
confused these requirements with elements of the proposed (but not yet implemented)
combined training in pediatrics and dermatology.
