To the Editor: Following publication of the
NCEP-ATP III Executive Summary,1 the extension
and tightening of treatment goals for high blood cholesterol levels in adults
runs headlong into economic reality. More than 50% of Americans are overweight,2 and the prevalence is increasing at an alarming
rate.3 With it will rise the prevalence
of hyperlipidemia, along with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which ATP elevates
into the same LDL goal category as proven vascular disease.
