To the Editor: Following publication of the NCEP-ATP III Executive Summary,1 the extension and tightening of treatment goals for high blood cholesterol levels in adults runs headlong into economic reality. More than 50% of Americans are overweight,2 and the prevalence is increasing at an alarming rate.3 With it will rise the prevalence of hyperlipidemia, along with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which ATP elevates into the same LDL goal category as proven vascular disease.
