In Reply: We agree with Dr Farrer and colleagues
that our data demonstrate a link between the tau gene and PD. However, their
suggestion that the genomic screen by DeStefano et al1
has comparable power to our study is incorrect. Our genomic screen2 used a much more powerful data set with 3 times
as many affected individuals (103 vs 378) and 4 times as many genotyped individuals
(219 vs 870). This increased power led to the identification of additional
loci, including the parkin gene, that DeStefano et al could not detect with
their smaller sample.
