To the Editor: Dr Mbori-Ngacha and colleagues1 concluded that "formula-fed infants [of HIV-1–positive
mothers] had a better outcome than breastfed infants." We disagree with this
conclusion because it was based on the assumption that the death rate among
breastfed infants will eventually be higher due to their higher likelihood
of being HIV-1–positive.
