In Reply: Dr Jonas asks whether our trial had a sufficiently sensitive assay to justify its public expense. More than 30% of placebo-controlled trials fail to show effects of recognized antidepressants,1,2 and we fully support the effort to understand the reasons for this failure rate and explore potentially superior trial designs, as has been discussed elsewhere. Meanwhile, despite shortcomings of the method, we reaffirm our belief that trials of this type are important to conduct.
