To the Editor: Dr Reiber and colleagues1 assessed therapeutic footwear in mixed groups of
diabetic patients with and without foot insensitivity. Because only the former
have a substantially increased risk of foot reulceration,2
a separate analysis of low-risk vs high-risk patients would have been helpful.
Reiber et al have based their statistical power calculation on data stemming
from only high-risk patients with foot insensitivity3,4;
it is possible, therefore, that their study was underpowered.
