In Reply: Ms Merry and colleagues and Dr Tomson and colleagues think that the conclusion of the study was overstated. I disagree. The conclusion reflected the study results: no association was found between newer-generation antiepileptic drugs and major birth defects. The conclusion was not that newer-generation antiepileptic drugs were safe, and it was clearly stated that especially for topiramate, gabapentin, and levetiracetam, only moderate to large risk increases could be excluded.
