Cherry-picking by Nursing Homes

JAMA. 2011;306(14):1535. doi:10.1001/jama.2011.1443

Nursing homes owned by private investment companies appear to be targeting their care to patients who receive higher reimbursements from Medicare and other insurers rather than to all patients needing skilled nursing services, suggested Sen Max Baucus (D, Mont) and Rep Pete Stark (D, Calif) in an August 15 release.

The congressmen made their suggestion based on a Government Accountability Office (GAO) report. In that report, the GAO also found private investor–owned homes had more total deficiencies than other types of facilities, although it found no significant difference in the quality of care when it looked at serious deficiencies that would harm a resident (http://tinyurl.com/3dgdg2c).
