Since the outbreak of cholera began in Haiti in October 2010, 23 US cases have been confirmed, according to a report from scientists from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other public health agencies (Newton AE et al. Emerg Infect Dis. 2011;17 [published online ahead of print October 12, 2011]).
Between October 2010 and April 2011, 275 000 cases of cholera and 4700 deaths were reported on the island of Hispaniola. Most of the cases and deaths occurred in Haiti, which was still reeling from the aftermath of a serious earthquake.
