Malaria and Miscarriage

JAMA. 2012;307(7):656. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.132

Malaria can increase the risk of miscarriage in early pregnancy, but treatment with antimalarial drugs appears safe and does not increase miscarriage risk, according to a large retrospective study in Thailand (McGready R et al. Lancet Infect Dis. doi:10.1016/S1473-3099[11]70339-5 [published online December 13, 2011]).

Researchers from Thailand and the United Kingdom analyzed data from the medical records of all women who attended clinics for refugees and migrants near the Thai-Burmese border from May 1986 to October 2010. Of these, 16 668 had no malaria during pregnancy while 945 had a single episode in the first trimester.
