Residents and fellows play unique roles in modern medical care—they provide the foundation of patient care at teaching institutions and serve as role models for medical students, while still honing their own clinical acumen and style. Postgraduate physicians in training also represent a labor force with special concerns in today's complex medical economy.

In recognition of the unique issues surrounding postgraduate medical training, THE JOURNAL is pleased to announce the establishment of On Call, a monthly feature beginning in early 2002 that will be devoted to postgraduate medical education and training. The aim of On Call is to provide a forum for discourse on educational, professional, and scientific topics of special relevance to residents and fellows. Topics of interest include but are not limited to education and training, career development, technology, international medicine, ethical and medicolegal concerns, psychosocial issues, and historical perspectives.
