To the Editor.—Dr Levinson's1 review of the 25th anniversary edition of my book, The Doctors' Case Against the Pill, pans my science, my
style, and even my spelling.
Levinson directs an endoscopy center at Stanford University that works
with corporate partners through a consortium promoting cooperation between
academia and industry. This consortium, "Spectrum," is supported by at least
2 pharmaceutical manufacturers of contraceptive hormones, Syntex and Wyeth
financial disclosure policy requires that conflicts of interest be disclosed
as part of an article, but Levinson noted no conflict of interest—stocks,
consultancies, honoraria, and the like—that might have influenced his
treatment of my book.
