In Reply.—In response to Dr Smith and others who also endorsed our Commentary, we are pleased to report that, following our call to action, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA) are coconveners of a planning process that will lead to a Clinical Research Summit meeting.

The AAMC and AMA are inviting relevant organizations interested in cosponsorship of an effort that will propose an action plan to address the future of clinical research in the United States and establish a benchmarking process to measure progress on specific action items over time. Planning meetings have been scheduled for winter of this year, will be followed by a retreat in the late spring, and will culminate in the Clinical Research Summit, scheduled to take place in Washington, DC, in the fall of 1998.
