In Reply.—Dr Becker adds an important perspective. The rehabilitative model can be very useful in working with chronic somatizing patients. It leads us to focus on the patient's functional status and role impairment and to utilize behavioral treatment approaches. Minimizing disability and sick-role behaviors and the resumption of activities that patients had previously avoided thus become major treatment goals. Behavioral techniques such as symptom diaries, as Becker notes, can be very helpful in this context.
