In Reply.—Ms Rooks raises some interesting points in her letter concerning our article on the changing pattern of prenatal care utilization in the United States from 1981 to 1995. The increase in utilization of prenatal care during the same period when rates of preterm birth and low birth weight have increased does suggest a paradox for which there are many possible explanations, including changes in multiple births, obstetric practices and technology, population characteristics, prenatal care use and content, and data management and reporting.
