To the Editor: Ms Fishbein's1 critique of the settlement agreement between the Alternatives Research & Development Foundation (a decade-old provider of research grants) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA)2 reflects ongoing efforts to use fabrications and distortions to create a panic within the US biomedical research and patient advocacy communities. A recent editorial in Nature noted that "some of the research lobby's arguments verge on the reactionary."3
