Abstract

The distinguished author, himself a pioneer in American surgery, traces the development of his specialty from the 17th century to the present. His discussions on such topics as colonial medicine and anesthesia are interesting, but the most fascinating passages concern 20th century surgery, to which he has personally contributed so much.
