Johann Mikulicz (von Mikulicz-Radecki), sympathetic surgeon, skillful technician, and famous pupil of Billroth of Vienna, was born in Czernowitz, Poland, at that time a part of Austria. His father, an imperial counselor, favored a career in law for his son, and, when this proposal was not accepted, it became necessary for Johann to provide for his own education. This was not an overwhelming obstacle because of a great love and exceptional capacity for music. Johann supported himself at school by giving piano lessons and playing the pipe organ. He received his medical training in Vienna and graduated at the age of 25. The Viennese faculty at that time included Hyrtl in anatomy, Rokitansky in pathology, von Hebra in dermatology, and Billroth in surgery. Following graduation, he assisted Billroth in the surgical clinic in the Allgemeine Krankenhaus, qualifying as assistant and later, as Privatdozent. It is reasonable to believe that the
