Abstract

The first edition of Practical Haematology was published in 1950. It was essentially a manual of procedures used in a hematology laboratory. The second edition, published in 1956, was an expanded version of the first. The present (third) edition presents in even more detail the theory and procedures used in a hematology laboratory and offers a notably expanded listing of useful references.

The authors in their preface regret that the book is larger than they intended it to be. They need not apologize; the volume is compact by present-day standards and contains an extraordinary amount of information, concisely presented. Subject matter ranges from morphology to serology to hemorrhagic disorders, radioisotopes, blood banking, biochemistry, and an appendix on certain technical details.

There is little that one can find that is not praiseworthy. A few small points may be mentioned. In this reviewer's opinion a useful addition would be an admonition regarding
