Abstract

For those who did not learn the language in childhood, translation of a large German textbook is a reckless undertaking seldom worth the effort. However, many chapters in this elaborate book, particularly those concerned with Reiter's disease and painful ulcerations of the vulva are well worth many hours with a German-English dictionary. Although two thirds of the book is a detailed discussion of gonorrhea and lymphogranuloma venereum, the minor genital diseases, including nonbacterial urethritis, phimosis, and granuloma inguinale, are well presented. Syphilis and chancroid are to be the subjects of the second volume in this set.

Each chapter develops logically, from a selective review of literature to a historical exposition of various hypotheses and conclusions. Impressive quality and objectivity are maintained throughout despite the participation of over two dozen authors. The book is well made and pleasant to handle.
