Pattern and Recent Trends in the Financial Support of Medical Schools

THIS PRESENTATION is intended to provide a factual basis for understanding of the subsequent discussions. The present pattern of financing of medical schools will be presented very briefly, followed by data on recent trends to enable the listener to make some guesses as to the future pattern. These data are mainly derived from an annual questionnaire which has been a joint effort for several years of the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals and the Association of American Medical Colleges. Mr. A. J. Carroll of Syracuse University in recent years has provided guidance for the efforts of the 2 associations to obtain more reliable data regarding the financial operations of medical schools. Since there have been changes in accounting procedures over the years, the annual data are not strictly comparable but are sufficiently so to make comparisons of value.
