A House Appropriations subcommittee has recommendedeliminating the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and ending discretionary spending on patient-centered outcomes research. Investigators and organizations involved in payment reform, patient safety, and comparative effectiveness research say the subcommittee's actions threaten to undermine attempts to improve and rationalize the health care system.
AHRQ was created through bipartisan support in 1989, when it was known as the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR). Its mission is to generate the evidence necessary to build a high-quality, high-value health care system.
