H3N2 Flu Virus Infections Increase During Fair Season

JAMA. 2012;308(9):851. doi:10.1001/2012.jama.11144

Federal health officials announced a steep summer increase in reported cases of influenza A(H3N2) variant virus infection.

From mid-July to mid-August, health officials in 4 states reported 153 new cases, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That figure contrasts with just 29 cases reported from July 2011, when the virus first was identified, to August 3, 2012. Most of the infections have been in children who had direct or indirect contact with swine, often at a state or local fair. Eight states have reported infections, but most have been in Indiana and Ohio.
