Lessons From Massachusetts: Cost Remains a Hurdle for Those With Public Insurance

As an emergency department physician at Masschusetts' second largest “safety-net” hospital in Cambridge, Danny McCormick, MD, MPH, sees patients having a hard time accessing health care despite the adoption of state health reform in 2006. Although many assumed that improved access to health coverage would also improve access to health care, McCormick said, patients who have obtained insurance through the state often find that cost remains a barrier to care.
