Overprescribing Antipsychotics

JAMA. 2012;308(18):1849. doi:10.1001/jama.2012.33462

Citing concerns over off-label prescribing of antipsychotics to address behavioral issues in dementia patients in nursing homes and assisted living facilities, 3 senators, in a bipartisan effort, introduced legislation that would require the secretary of Health and Human Services to develop a standardized protocol for obtaining informed consent prior to the use of such medications.

The Improving Dementia Care Treatment for Older Adults Act of 2012 (S 3604 [http://tinyurl.com/9qe6nlz]) would also create prescriber education programs to promote evidence-based treatments.
