In Reply: Dr Gross and colleagues raise an important concern regarding the possibility that depression may impair an individual's ability to adhere to a healthy lifestyle. Depressive symptoms have been associated with risk of SCD within this cohort previously1; thus, the association between lifestyle and SCD may be confounded in part by depressive symptoms. Information on depression and depressive symptoms was not available at the beginning of study follow-up in 1984 and not included in our multivariable models.
