Inflammation Suspected in Eye Disorders

JAMA. 2005;294(1):31-32. doi:10.1001/jama.294.1.31

Fort Lauderdale, Fla—Eye examinations may provide an inside look at the inflammatory processes that might contribute to both eye disease and cardiovascular disease, say researchers studying the link between disorders of the eye and the cardiovascular system.

The researchers hope such evidence will help elucidate the mechanisms of these diseases, suggest new diagnostic techniques, and point to potential prevention and treatment strategies. Several researchers presenting at the annual meeting of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology in May provided new evidence about the relationship between cardiovascular disease, inflammation, and such eye diseases as retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
