This spring the songbirds ceased their scold
of our old cat. Almost as if they overheard
the vet’s phone call about the biopsy results
that explain the cough, the lumps we felt.
He still goes out, some days, but moving slower
he must seem no threat, curled asleep
in a pool of sun. The pills are down to
one a day, hidden cleverly in a treat.
