On the Table

The cold rod inserted
at the base of the brain,
immobilized yet alive,
I lie here like the frog,
belly up, slit, peeled, pinned.

Doctors and nurses gather
to excise one sliver
of rotting flesh so it
does not infect the rest.
I trust them completely.
