By sequencing the genomes of 263 isolates of Shigella sonnei from patients who had been treated in Vietnam during a 15-year period, an international team of researchers has generated a detailed depiction of the genome of the pathogen responsible for approximately one-sixth of the more than 160 million cases of dysentery and 1 million related deaths each year (Holt KE et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. doi:10.1073/pnas.1308632110 [published online September 30, 2013]).
