Vaccination Effort Targets Middle East After Polio Outbreak in Syria

JAMA. 2013;310(23):2497. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.284182

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a polio emergency in the Middle East this month and is partnering with the United Nations Children’s Fund to conduct a massive vaccination campaign to inoculate more than 20 million children in 7 countries against polio and other diseases in this region over the next 6 months (http://bit.ly/17KzyvT). Efforts to immunize children in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and the West Bank and Gaza follow a vaccination program launched in Syria in late October to contain an outbreak of poliovirus infection that has arisen in this war-torn country (http://bit.ly/1e0bw4X).
