Funding to Boost Mental Health Care

JAMA. 2014;311(4):350. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.286116

The Obama Administration has committed $100 million to improve mental health care access for US individuals.

The Affordable Care Act requires insurers to cover mental health and substance abuse care as they do other illnesses and to cover preventive mental health screenings. These provisions will expand the demand for mental health care.

To help meet the demand for care, the Department of Health and Human Services will allocate half the money to community health centers to enhance mental health and addiction services offered by these facilities, either by hiring staff or adding to the services.
