While under investigation by the Senate Finance Committee, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) issued a press release on September 2 defending its funding arrangements with pharmaceutical manufacturers.
In a July 10 letter to the APA, Sen Chuck Grassley (R, Iowa), ranking member of the Finance Committee, asked for an accounting of industry funding of the association. “ . . . [I]t is alleged that pharmaceutical companies give money to nonprofits in an attempt to garner favor in ways that increase sales of their products,” said Grassley, who sent similar requests to the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology for information on financial relationships with pharmaceutical companies.
