The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has reduced its disability claims backlog, but the department still needs to do more to ensure such claims are processed in a timely manner, said senators during a December 11 hearing of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.
During the hearing, the VA reported there were fewer than 694 000 pending claims, the fewest since July 2012. However, of that number, 395 000, 57% of the total inventory, have been pending longer than 125 days, the VA’s own maximum period for making claim decisions. Still, the numbers are better than those presented before the committee last March, when more than 896 000 claims awaited review, with 70% pending for more than 125 days.
