Time Piece

JAMA. 2014;311(6):627. doi:10.1001/jama.2013.236688

The watch on a long silver chain
falls close to my heart, where
the giver resides even after death.

“Miss Jayne,” an old family friend,
bought it for me in Switzerland
when I was fifteen, when everyone I knew
was still living, when clocks
and hearts beat time in the old ways,
gears clicking along in Swiss accuracy
like the sanguinal throbbing
of arteries, the blue eternal flow.
