Spina Bifida: Management and Outcome

JAMA. 2009;301(4):439-440. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.27

Given the significant reduction in the incidence of spina bifida in most developed countries, it would seem an unlikely time to collate a comprehensive reference addressing all aspects of the condition. It is, however, commonly seen by neurosurgeons and other health professionals worldwide. Prevention, antenatal diagnosis, and counseling and management of the condition remain important ongoing challenges. Spina Bifida brings together multiple aspects of the condition, theoretical as well as practical. The text discusses neurosurgical concerns along with associated orthopedic and urologic issues. The real strength of the text, however, is its unique handling of the psychosocial and medical aspects of spina bifida.
