This worthwhile volume, edited by the author of the readable A History of Medicine (1992), might have been subtitled "Fascinating Facts about the Not-so-famous." In it 50 medical historians (28 men and 22 women) relate biographies of 46 men and 10 women in health and medicine. The format for each short biography is similar: claim to fame; life, work, and place in the universal quest for health and healing; and writings by and about the subject. The content is uniformly good, and the writing quality is excellent.
