Antipsychotic Risks

JAMA. 2009;301(8):817. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.199

New data suggest that typical and atypical antispsychotic medications carry a similar risk of sudden cardiac death, according to the results of a study funded by the US Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.

To assess the relative risks of atypical and typical antipsychotic drugs, scientists conducted a retrospective cohort study of Medicaid users in Tennessee (Ray WA et al. N Engl J Med. 2009;360[3]:225-235). The study included more than 44 000 users of typical antipsychotics, more than 46 000 users of atypical antipsychotics, and 186 000 matched controls.
