I thought I was seeing triple as I looked at the marvelous triptych in my mailbox. Mark Feldman has edited a series, the avowed purpose of which is to impart a visual image of the subject at hand. The key word is visual, as the various forms reviewed (book, CD-ROM, slide collection) consist for the most part of images of the organ system presented. Volumes 5 and 6 of Gastroenterology and Hepatology cover the esophagus and gallbladder, anatomy, physiology, and pathology, including tumors and inflammation. The esophagus volume includes endoscopy and surgery. The volume on the gallbladder deals with the inflammatory entities such as sclerosing cholangitis, motility of the gallbladder and the sphincter of Oddi, and stone disease. Surgery, cancer, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, and infections round out the chapters.
