This third edition represents a major departure from the previous editions of 1983 and 1990. Although Emery and Rimoin's Principles and Practice of Medical Genetics remains a two-volume text, the size and number of pages have increased dramatically. Alan E. H. Emery has retired from the editorship, and two other renowned medical geneticists, J. Michael Connor (Glasgow, Scotland) and Reed E. Pyeritz (Pittsburgh, Pa), have joined David L. Rimoin (Los Angeles, Calif). The number of contributing authors has also risen, from 127 and 154 in the first and second editions to 235, with a high proportion of turnover. The majority are from North America and the British Isles, with others from continental Europe (including Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands), Australia, Taiwan, South Africa, and Tunis—an international authorship.
