Influenza has been in the forefront of medical news recently because of the widespread avian influenza epizootic and the threat that it poses for emergence of a new human influenza pandemic virus. This is the focus of Influenza, a monograph in the Biographies of Disease series and directed primarily toward the lay public. Historical background for the early recognition of influenza pandemics and for the establishment of the “germ theory” is provided in the introduction.
