Stem Cell Bill

JAMA. 2009;301(14):1427. doi:10.1001/jama.2009.448

While President Barack Obama signed an executive order March 9 ending the ban on federally funded research for most stem cell lines, bills introduced in February in the House and Senate promise to codify the parameters of such study.

The Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act (S 487 and HR 873 [http://thomas.loc.gov]) would allow federal funding for research using stem cell lines derived under strict ethical requirements from excess in vitro fertilization embryos, regardless of the date they were derived. Last year, similar legislation was passed by Congress but vetoed by then-President George Bush, who had banned research on stem cell lines created after August 9, 2001.
