To paraphrase an old reference to syphilis, “to know diabetes is to know medicine.” Unfortunately, what the clinician needs to know is increasing daily. The multiplication of therapeutic options, the multisystem potential complications, the economic pressure to achieve certain benchmarks of care, the rapidly increasing epidemic of the number of persons with diabetes—all can overwhelm the practicing physician. Reviews and textbooks vary from the simple cookbook to the impractical encyclopedia. To the clinician who just requests “Tell me what I need to know,” Management of Diabetes Mellitus: A Guide to the Pattern Approach is a worthwhile and valuable reference.
